Some people in San Francisco seem to be taking too much advantage of the newly introduced self-driving taxis as reports of passengers having sex in the robocars are increasing.
Despite a 2018 study predicting that more autonomous vehicles could mean more sexy time on the road, the taxi’s rules of “no inappropriate behavior” seems to have forgotten that while the cars are robotic, the passengers are all too human.
Robotaxi operators Cruise and Waymo have been operating fully driverless vehicles in San Francisco since early 2022, and got the go-ahead last week from the city to offer fully driverless rides 24/7 going forward.
Cruise operates about 300 vehicles at night and 100 during the day, and Waymo has a fleet of 250 robotaxis in service. At the time they were described as trailblazers, but recently concerns over hygiene have trumped concerns around safety.

One passenger who admitted to having sex in a driverless taxi said that it has become a common practice amongst the folks in his ‘circle’. He even admitted to having had sex in robotaxis three times already.
“Was it the most comfortable? Was it the most ideal? Probably not, but the fact that we were out and about in public, the whole taboo of it being kind of wrong made it more fun and exciting.”
A 2018 study by Scott Cohen and Debbie Hopkins in the Annals of Tourism Research journal predicted that passengers might use robotaxis for sex.
“Hotels-by-the-hour are likely to be replaced by connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs),” the researchers wrote. “This will have implications for urban tourism, as sex plays a central role in many tourism experiences.
We just can’t help ourselves, can we?
The study even mentioned that the experience could be put to commercial use, as in a version of Amsterdam’s Red Light District ‘on the move.”
When a porn video of a couple having sex in a moving Tesla on Autopilot surfaced in 2019, even Elon Musk seemed unsurprised, tweeting “Turns out there’s more ways to use Autopilot than we imagined. Shoulda seen it coming…”

Despite there being no law against having sex in an autonomous vehicle, people tend to forget that these cars are under constant camera surveillance. In some cases, this might just be a spicy bonus for some amorous fairs.
It would appear the mile-high club will soon be replaced by the mile-naai club. As we mentioned, humans just can’t help themselves.
Still, dealing with a previous passenger’s farts in a taxi is one thing, but a post-coital backseat is another level of Eeeuuuw.
