We see you flexing your isiXhosa, Davis, and we love it.
It’s not the first time that Davis has chosen SA has her fave spot to celebrate; we may be a bit biased but ja ne, there’s nothing like the vibe in Cape Town, whether or not you’re going on a hot date or indulging in B-day cakes.
In 2021, Davis come to South Africa to film and produce The Woman King, and the experience clearly solidified her connection to our beautiful country. Davis collaborated on the film with local talents such as Thuso Mbedu and Masali Baduza, and has become close to the actors through their filmmaking journey.
The Woman King not only contributed to Davis’ own professional journey but also significantly raised South Africa’s appeal as a prime destination for filmmaking. The film played a role in raising awareness about South Africa as an ideal location for cinematic storytelling.
When reflecting on her time working on The Woman King, Davis expressed a deep feeling of connection to our land:
“Well, I felt it was worth it when I got on to the soil in South Africa in that red dirt… Then, when you see your dream and you see all your hard work come to fruition, and then to present it to the world.”
Davis’ connection to Cape Town and her appreciation for South Africa’s film industry, and the country’s people in general, serves as a reminder of the transformative power of cross-cultural collaborations. And that we do really have a nice piece of earth down here.
