Three suspects were nabbed in connection with a daring cash-in-transit (CIT) heist this week, which saw the theft of R8,000 in coins.

That’s a LOT of small change, with huge consequences.

Apparently we’ve got a thing for CIT robberies in SA, with a similarly explosive incident occurring just earlier this year. Sheesh, how much ‘danger pay’ do these CIT vehicle drivers deserve? A sizeable amount, in my opinion. Hopefully, they don’t get paid in kleingeld.

The three men implicated in the most recent case have been ordered to remain in custody following their appearance in the Malelane Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga, and the individuals, identified as Mosu Bheki Ngwenyama, Ally Obby Ebrahim, and Lawrence Lubisi, have been charged with a range of serious offences including two counts of attempted murder, armed robbery, possession of explosives, malicious damage to property, and conspiracy to commit a crime.

While these three suspects appeared in court, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, noted that a fourth individual was taken in for questioning and could not be immediately linked to the incident.

The court postponed the matter until August 23, 2023, for a formal bail application, where they’ll also deal with this ‘one that got away’.

The trio of criminals was arrested on August 11, 2023, after they forcefully collided their Mercedes Benz C Class into an armoured vehicle operated by Fidelity. After seeing the crazy footage of the heist, many SA onlookers have been wondering, ‘They did this in that Merc?!’

The incident occurred near the N4 highway, while the armoured vehicle was en route from Malelane to Tonga.

Police spokesperson Captain Dineo Sekgotodi provided insight into the progress of the investigation, sharing that four suspects were apprehended during the operation, and further inquiries are currently underway. The hefty heist has also drawn attention from hardcore crime-stoppers the Hawks.

With a firm stance against criminals targeting cash vans, Major-General Nicholas Gerber, head of the Hawks’ Mpumalanga division, issued a warning to wrongdoers.

“The Hawks are not alone in this fight, we are squeezing the space where these suspects are operating. We have made a serious impact over the past couple of weeks. We will not rest. This is a collaborative effort and the strategy is bearing excellent results in a short space of time.”

Major-General Gerber encouraged individuals with additional information about the whereabouts of other potential suspects to reach out to their local police station, reinforcing the collective effort to combat such criminal activities.
