It seems there is plenty more drama to be had as society tries to scrape Thabo Bester from the bottom of its shoe. This time the murderous rapist claims that about R30 million worth of ill-gotten luxury goods went missing after his arrest by the boys in blue.
Bester was apprehended with his lover, Dr Nandipha Magudumana, in Tanzania in April, but is now bemoaning the theft of the items – which in all fairness seems to be the proceeds of crime anyway. Jirre, this guy…
The pair had fled the country after news broke that Bester had not died in a fire in his cell in May 2022 and he had been living outside the prison with Magudumana and her children in Hyde Park, Johannesburg.
Their luxury rental home was just around the corner from EFF leader Julius Malema’s home he rents from the confessed cigarette smuggler Adriano Mazzotti and just down the road from President Cyril Ramaphosa’s house. That’s some neighbourhood.
Bester and Magudumana were reunited for the first time on Tuesday as they sat in the dock with 10 other suspects accused of helping Bester escape. The pair were all cuddly as they exchanged glances and whispered to each other.
From the outside, it really does seem like they live in some kind of demented soapy where their love can conquer all, including rape and murder charges. It’s both fascinating and sickening to watch. Especially as Bester preens around in his R25 000 Louis Vuitton sweater.
The list of items that the rapist-murderer claims were ‘stolen’, includes six watches worth over R2.5 million each. If his claims are true, it means Bester was fleeing through Africa with assets worth approximately R 30 million. Most of this would have been accumulated during the time after he escaped, as well as from the scams he was running from inside prison.
Bester has been accused of a number of dodgy deals, including a glitzy Women in Media scam event on 13 June 2018, which included high society, celebrities, and media, under Bester’s fake 21st Century Media company.
The company was meant to look like a subsidiary of 21st Century Fox, and the event was held at the Hilton Hotel in Sandton. At the time, Bester was using the alias Tom Motsepe, and posed as a wealthy businessman spending his time in New York.
The total list of items he claims were ‘missing’ include:
The list reads like a Christmas shopping list for Grace Mugabe’s children. Bester even had the cheek to open up a case at the Lanseria Police Station for the ill-gotten goods.
Who knows what else will come to light in this bizarre trial, but hopefully this time he gets what’s coming to him. Sometimes you have to flush twice.
