Actor David Rees, who is popularly known for his role as Chris Welman in the Afrikaans soapie 7de Laan, is currently in hospital after suffering a heart attack on Sunday.
His manager Corlia Strauss told the publication that Rees was with his friends when he had the heart attack; an ambulance was called, and they contacted his sister.
According to her, they were sent from pillar to post, and after a misdiagnosis of an ulcer at a public hospital she decided to move him to a private hospital with a cardiology unit.
This stay at a private hospital has now forced the family to ask for help with his medical costs. Rees, who is in need of a double bypass surgery doesn’t have medical aid and this has placed physical strain, as well as emotional and financial burdens, on his family.
As the news does the rounds in television circles, many are asking how it is possible that a longstanding soapie actor does not earn enough to afford medical aid.
“David is not on medical aid, and I’ve had to cover accident fees, doctors’ bills, scans, and blood tests. The costs are mounting daily, and he will likely be hospitalised for some time. However, he is receiving excellent care.”
Fellow actor Tracey Meintjes DeWet added: “So sad that our actors don’t earn enough to have medical aid. They are every bit as good as the American actors who earn millions.”
