We simply can’t deny that 2023 is a stellar year for South African women’s sports. And to that, we say viva!
Despite an exciting win against Uganda on Wednesday, the Proteas needed 64 goals to continue on to the next round. The final score against the tough Ugandan squad ended up being a narrow 52-50 – our SA ladies clearly fought hard but just couldn’t swing it.
That being said, the SA team will compete today in order to secure fifth or sixth place. As far as professional sports go, that’s a d*mn good placement, and we couldn’t be prouder.
The whole Netball World Cup, hosted in our beautiful mother city, has no doubt been a jol for many locals. Although let’s not rehash the very real SA moment last month when Jamaican national players were robbed and were consequentially, understandably, ready to pack up and go home.
Even though the whole country shares the disappointment that we won’t see our girls play in the semi-final, the footage below is evidence that our squad is tough as nails:
The Ugandan women’s team managed to secure their spot in the next round with Mary Cholhok as the team’s MVP. Cholhok has a 100 percent success goal rate; that’s some intimidating data.
While we salute our netball girls as they finish up in the Netball World Cup, all eyes will be on the South African women’s soccer team as they take on the Netherlands this Sunday. Top tip though: the game is at 4 am SA time, so if you’re keen for a Sunday sleep-in, rather catch the game later in the day as a re-watch.
