While Leonardo DiCaprio was undoubtedly mesmerising in 2013 hit film The Wolf of Wall Street, another star has become the focus of attention: the white Lamborghini Countach that made DiCaprio’s drug-induced scene all the more riveting.
Auction house RM Sotheby’s has piqued the interest of film nerds and billionaires alike, with their recent announcement that the exact car used on the Martin Scorsese filmset will be up for auction.
If you’re keen to be on the list of people bidding on this beauty, just remember that the sportscar is likely to fetch between $1.5m and $2m (approximately R30 million for us Saffas). That’ll make a serious dent in your pocket.
To be clear, there were two Countachs used during shooting: the one we all saw totalled in the memorable scene below, and another pristine vehicle known as the “hero car” used in all the shots where the precious Lambo is still intact.
The auction house explained that, needless to say, the car up for bidding will be the “hero” one.
Tugging at the sentimental side of my filmophile heart, I’m glad to hear from RM Sotheby’s that the beat-up Countach will still be kept for posterity:
“[the crashed Lamborghini] remains in the same condition to this day, solidifying its own place as a Hollywood icon with its now infamous battle scars.”
For the car geeks out there, you’re probably already aware of the specs of the classic car, of which only 12 US specification versions exist.
With its sexy 80’s throwback wedge design, the 25th-anniversary edition car boasts a 5.2-liter V12 engine producing 449 horsepower to accelerate the car from 0-100km/h in under 5 seconds.
It’s not the only laarnie car that’ll be on show for the epic auction:
“The sale will feature other similar cars — unique, highly collectible, with a degree of provenance, low mileage, or one-off specifications. Our team has a great track record of curating boutique sales such as this, and we look forward to showcasing this during Luxury Week.”
I wonder which billionaire will snag the superstar car this time? I’ll be waiting with popcorn in my beat-up Toyota hatchback.
