Chinese tennis star Yibing Wu has been forced to retire from the Mubadala Citi DC Open after appearing to collapse on the court. The scary incident happened just mere weeks after he also fainted during the 2023 Wimbledon tournament.
The 23-year-old tennis player was in the last stages of qualifying when he seemed to look disorientated as he headed back to his chair. Wu slumped forward onto the chair as a worried ballboy with an umbrella tried to hold him up.
Staff rushed in to assist before lowering him to the ground. Fearing for his health in the heat, medical officials attended to the player and the match was stopped.
It is not the first health scare for the world No.90 this summer, following fears during his match against Frances Tiafoe at Wimbledon. Earlier in the month while playing against the American, Wu was attended to by medics after bowing his head in his chair, with his heart rate measuring a galloping 187bpm.
The match did end up resuming after a break, with Wu losing in straight sets. He later said that he may have had indigestion after eating during an earlier rain break.
Wu also told reporters during a press conference that he suspects something was wrong with the food he ate the previous night, saying that “I was better after my medical timeout, but it still affected my breathing. I feel good to play like I did, given my situation. I will go for a further check-up later.”

Since turning pro back in 2017, Wu has made just short of £1 million (R23 million) in prize money and has been ranked as high as 54 on the singles tour. He became the first male Chinese player to qualify for the US Open during his Grand Slam debut in 2022
He was one of the stars at the US Open earlier this year and also represented his country in the David Cup.
