Aerial footage has emerged showing many peoples’ worst nightmare: boat plus excitable shark equals a terrifying boat-quake.
All this group of chommies in Florida wanted to do was enjoy an idyllic day of fishing, but a bull shark had other ideas.
Josh Jorgensen, who took the footage while waiting on the beach, was using his digital birds-eye-view to assist his friend Carl Torresson on his fishing venture just off Palm Beach coast. The trip begins merrily enough, with Jorgensen spotting a pair of cobia, also known as sergeant fish.
“Cobia is one of the best tasting fish in the ocean. So, I called my buddy Carl, and he raced over to try to catch them.”
Torresson immediately put Jorgensen’s guidance to use and brought the boat around to where the two potential fish-steaks could be clearly seen through the sparkling blue water. All fun and games, until a young aggressive bull shark decided to challenge Torresson’s boat to a one-sided fight.
Attacking the boat five times wasn’t enough for this young upstart of a marine creature; the shark came back again and again, relentlessly bumping Torresson’s boat. Even though bull sharks rarely reach the size of other shark breeds, they are notoriously tough.
Despite the size of the fishing boat, the bull shark managed to shake the vessel so much, Torresson and co. surely almost kakked themselves.
“I didn’t think a shark could actually shake a boat like that. The boat was shaking like a bag of popcorn. Like, literally, I was shaking like an earthquake. I was like, ‘What’s going on?’ I went back there, and I noticed it was a shark doing it. I’m like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ This is like a ride from Universal Studios,” Jorgensen exclaimed.
Thankfully, this rollercoaster brought all passengers safely back to shore.
Jorgensen remained in disbelief when he found out that his boat engine, while still salvageable, had been badly damaged by the overly-enthusiastic shark.
Seeing the video below, it’s easy to understand the shock surrounding the incident, even if you’ve already been fishing for decades like these guys:
Someone definitely CC-ed this shark in on the end-of-July Shark Week email. Or perhaps the little guy owed a favour to the two cobia who escaped the frying pan?
All jest aside, I hope I keep as a cool head as these okes when (if ever) I decide to embark on a deep-sea fishing trip.
