TikTok has always been more of a ‘show-than-tell’ app, but it seems the Chinese-owned app is sliming its way into the ‘text’ world now, perhaps hoping that Twitter and Threads will destroy each other.
TikTok for people who can read? Why not. The video streaming app that brought us the bottle-flip says it will offer text-only posts as competition between social media giants heats up. TikTok claims its new feature gives users “another way to express themselves”.
It appears the backlash to its ‘supposed spying’ has unleashed a burst of innovation at TikTok as they launched a new music streaming service to rival platforms like Spotify and Apple Music earlier this month as well.
TikTok is now taking on Meta, Twitter, Youtube Shorts, Spotify, and Apple Music in one go.
TikTok users will now be offered three options on the app – whether to post photos, videos, or text. They will also be able to customise posts by adding sound, location, or Duets, which are video reactions to posts by other TikTok users.
The latter is going to be meta-uber as you can now see reaction videos on reaction videos in a voyeuristic people-watching way.
“These features make it so your text posts are just as dynamic and interactive as any video or photo post.”
The birthplace of twerking rolled out a beta version of its new music streaming service, TikTok Music, in Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico and Australia last month, which would allow users to “listen, share and download the music they have discovered on TikTok, as well as share their favourite tracks and artists with their TikTok community”.
In 2021, TikTok became the world’s most popular online destination as it had more hits than US search engine giant Google. This should have been a good indication that reading isn’t so hot anymore.
With all the social media apps appearing post-pandemic, our smartphones are beginning to resemble a wet towel that’s been dropped on the bathroom floor. It smells, and pretty soon you’ll have to replace it with a fresh one that’s not so saturated with ‘human’.

See what we mean? Does the world need another app where people can misspell their opinions, or describe how surprised they were when a bottle landed right-side up after a thousand attempts?
Maybe not, but what else are all the smart people in tech going to work on?
