Residents of several Cape Town suburbs reported a mysterious gas smell earlier this week, and authorities seems to be baffled by it.
Mind you, this was before the hectic Joburg explosion, so it most likely wasn’t brought on by paranoia over gas explosions.
Cape Talk spoke to Jermaine Carelse from Cape Town Fire and Rescue, but it seems they are as mystified by the gaseous smell as everyone else. Which is not good at all.
The City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services were reportedly sent out to investigate but were unable to locate the source. Carelse says they were inundated with calls but by the time they arrived, the smell had dissipated.
“The weather has been hectic so who knows, maybe there is something offshore that is wafting in.”
Apparently, a similar phenomenon happened in Long Beach in America last year and they believe the smell came from an offshore dredging operation. But we don’t have one of those either.
“This is one of the anomalies that we can’t explain.”
This would be a good opening for a fart joke, but after seeing what happened in Jozi this week, a conundrum should perhaps be a concern and not a laughing matter.
