The world’s best surfers are in town for the Corona Open J-Bay, which just kicked off in Jeffreys Bay.
This weekend, a giant great white shark was among the pro surfers in the water, innocently stalking the dangling feet of some okes who were none the wiser.
J-Bay’s coast is notoriously sharky, but this big guy seemed chill and easy-going, letting the surfers do their thing without having a sneaky little taste.
That’s wild considering it’s been eight years since 3x surfing World Champion Mick Fanning’s traumatising shark encounter at Jeffreys Bay, per Surfer Mag.
Since then, countless J-bay heats have been put on hold due to shark sightings and multiple attacks on free surfers (including one just a month and a half ago, when a 50-year-old man was severely attacked by a shark (and survived)).

Now, the first publicly shared footage of a great white shark at the 2023 Corona Open J-Bay captured by Nathan Florence’s filmer, Zoard, is chilling everyone to the bone:

South African Grant “Twiggy” Baker chimed in on the YouTube video that “The only reason you see them is because the water’s clean, they come past every day sniffing toes.”
Yikes. The way one of the dudes so calmly paddled away, looking more interested in a potential set than the predator, was unnerving and impressive.
