Not enough people are talking about the French Women’s World Cup ad with an unexpected twist.
We’ve all heard someone (or been someone) who thinks that women’s sport just isn’t as exciting as men’s sport, which is a completely unfortunate and misguided way of thinking.
That’s why football fans are buzzing about the football advertisement that turns this assumption on its head.
The ad features French stars Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann, or so it seems at first, only to really challenge people’s perceptions of women’s football by unveiling that they were actually deepfakes of some of the best female stars.
The message in the ad reads: “Only Les Bleus can give us these emotions. But that’s not them you’ve just seen.” The footage rewinds and the visual effects (VFX) editing process is revealed, showing that the skills and the goals are actually all those of female players, including Sakina Karchaoui and Selma Bacha, per The Straits Times.
“Absolutely bamboozled me. Great ad,” one fan wrote on Reddit, while one Twitter user describes it as “the French commercial that blew our minds”.
Prepare to be blown away by the capability of women in sports:
Fifth in the Fifa women’s rankings, France opened their World Cup campaign when they took on Jamaica in Sydney yesterday. That marked their fifth appearance in nine editions, with their best finish being fourth place in Germany in 2011.
The video proves that the quality at the Women’s World Cup is going to be just as impressive as it was in Qatar and it’s difficult to tell the difference at times.
