Despite an actor’s strike looming over the entertainment industry (following on from the writer’s strike), the Emmys are still scheduled to kick off this year’s awards season.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Emmy Awards, which celebrate the best of primetime television, and the usual suspects are ahead as usual.
Of course, the zombie epic The Last of Us is up for at least an Outstanding Drama Series nomination, with Succession‘s Jeremy Strong, Brian Cox, and Kieran Culkin hoping to be honoured with Lead Actor nominations. The show is taking its last bow, and earning a leading 27 nominations is already a terrific mic drop.
Deadline writes that in the race for the main Drama Series, Succession will go up against fellow HBO hits that include House of the Dragon, The Last of Us and The White Lotus in addition to Andor, The Crown and Yellowjackets.
On the comedy side, the lineup is not entirely surprising: Ted Lasso, Barry, Only Murders in the Building, Abbott Elementary and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel are back in the running, but Academy voters left room for three new players in Wednesday, The Bear and Jury Duty.
Meanwhile, the Limited Series category has once again shaped up to be a competitive situation: Beef will compete against fellow Netflix hit Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, while Daisy Jones & The Six will vie for the prize alongside Fleishman Is in Trouble and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Otherwise, Rihanna could land her very first Emmy nomination for The Pepsi Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show Starring Rihanna, which could be up for Outstanding Variety Special (Live).
Our boy Trevor Noah is also up for an Emmy in the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category for his wonderful role in The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, which he quit this year for other passion projects.
