The 2023 Wimbledon match between Grigor Dimitrov and Sho Shimabukuro was targeted by two Just Stop Oil protesters who threw orange-coloured confetti and jigsaw pieces onto Court 18.
A third protester then targeted Katie Boulter’s match against Daria Saville resulting in even the crowd telling them to “get off!”
Ja nee, these protests are becoming very pedestrian now, and what was especially noticeable with the recent guerilla-confetti antics was their age. The Wimbledon wing of Just Stop Oil seems to be the geriatric chapter. Perhaps the kids were busy glueing themselves to David’s phallus.
Environmental protest group, Just Stop Oil, has targeted various sporting events, including an Ashes Test.
Followers of the group – which calls for the government to halt all new oil, gas, and coal projects – also disrupted the rugby union Premiership final and the World Snooker Championship.
Back at Wimbledon, a man and woman ran onto the court, throwing confetti and jigsaw pieces from a Wimbledon ‘Centre Court View’ jigsaw puzzle box onto the grass. The man then sat down on Court 18 before he was removed. I hope they found all the pieces…
A couple of hours later another man ran on to the same court, where British number one Boulter had just resumed her rain-interrupted first-round match against Australian Saville.
Following the breaks in play, a Wimbledon shop worker told BBC Sport they had stopped selling jigsaws for now. Mission accomplished for the protestors, but some Chinese kid is going to lose his job at the jigsaw factory because of the drop in sales.
Protests these days are really running out of clever ideas. Disrupting a sporting event doesn’t make anyone sympathetic to your cause. We watch sports to escape politics, but alright, point taken. Oil is bad and we can do with using less.
Just don’t try your running onto the field sh** during the Rugby World Cup. You’re going to get hurt.
On second thought, go for it.
