Apple has posted the entire first episode of one of its most-praised original TV shows — Silo — on Twitter, and top twit Elon Musk described the decision as a “great move”.
Peeps seem to agree as the episode has been viewed 23.8 million times. Users can also use Apple AirPlay to cast the episode to supported TVs.
Silo is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi series based on the novel of the same name by Hugh Howey and tells the story of a community living in a giant silo underground, supposedly because the Earth’s surface has become uninhabitable. The silo’s occupants however don’t know the reason for their confinement, as the authorities blame a rebellion for wiping out historical records over 100 years before the show takes place.
In addition to starring Rebecca Ferguson as Nichols, the show features Shawshank Redemption’s Tim Robbins, Game of Thrones and Resident Evil star Iain Glen, Parks and Recreation’s Rashida Jones, and US rapper Common.
The show has been widely praised by both critics and viewers after it’s initial release, with the final episode being aired on June 30th, that’s today.
Since Musk took over at Twitter, the platform has embraced the posting of longer videos, and ‘verified blue tick’ users were allowed to upload one-hour clips up to 2GB in size in December already. The platform has however doubled down on the move and in May 2023, it extended the length allowed and quadrupled the maximum video file size to 8GB.
A 1080p video typically takes up about 3GB per hour, so users should be able to post two-hour movies in full HD quality — the maximum resolution supported by Twitter.
Non-subscribers can still only upload videos up to 2 minutes and 20 seconds long with a maximum size of 512MB.
The ‘new Twitter’ is attracting a lot of personalities that have previously been seen as ‘problematic’ to conventional TV, and since the length has been extended, stick-pokers like Tucker Carlson and Matt Walsh have been making the most of it.
Daily Wire’s publication of Walsh’s controversial 90-minute “What is a Woman?” film drew over 170 million plays and the sacked Fox News presenter Carlson also started a show on Twitter — achieving over 365 million plays across seven episodes.
Musk has however assured the more left-leaning media that they would be given the same platform as these two in order to air their views – whatever that may be.
It should be noted that the Apple TV+ app also allows users to watch the first episode of many of its TV shows without signing up for a subscription.
Since first launching the service in November 2019, Apple Original has raked in 343 awards with their series and doccies, including four Primetime Emmy Awards. This was one more than Netflix managed.
In South Africa, Apple TV+ costs R124.99 per month.
