Creator of The Office, Ricky Gervais has confirmed that he is in talks with Spotify for a ‘huge deal’, and at the same time plans to take on Disney with his own animation show.
Something tells us it’s not going to be a ‘woke’ cartoon.
The actor, who hilariously terrorised all the pretty people at the Golden Globes for a number of years, is set to sign a multi-million-pound deal with music streaming giant Spotify, saying “I’ve got a couple of ideas – I’ve got three ideas, so I’m going to do a little pilot for each and then decide.”
During a recent Q&A with fans, Gervais said the animated series will not be based on his best-selling cartoon Flanimals. Flanimals is a book series written by the comedian and depicts an assortment of seemingly useless or inadequate fictional animals and their behaviour.
Initially, there were plans to turn the books into cartoons, but the project was cancelled by ITV Studios.
“I’ve been talking to Spotify about doing something. I want it to be fun but I don’t want it to be my job. I don’t want to have to do tons of research and write something like it’s a Radio 4 documentary.”
The Spotify idea apparently came after a recent run-in with a gym bully.
Gervais is one of the most prolific comedians out there, with his hit series The Office now also getting an Australian reboot. The show is set to launch in 2024 in more than 240 countries and territories, and will focus on a ‘contemporary Australian workplace.’
The Ozzie version will have a female ‘David Brent’, played by Felicity Ward.
With creator royalties coming to Gervais, the success of his shows must be making this funnyman some serious money.
