Rondebosch Boys’ High has apparently been forced to call in legal help to protect 1st team coach Joel Carew after he received threats from an unhappy parent.
According to Sunday papers, the threats became so severe that the coach considered leaving his position at the school after someone’s dad couldn’t deal with his son being excluded from the 1st team.
The parent is apparently a well-known businessman in Cape Town, and allegedly confronted, abused and threatened Carew at a training session. The abuse continued afterwards with threatening messages being sent to the coach via phone.
The abuse got so bad that Rondebosch principal Shaun Simpson was forced to write a wide-ranging three-page letter to parents, saying that ‘intimidation tactics…from certain parents’ had forced the school to seek legal help to protect their teachers and coaches.’
‘In their relentless search for self-fulfillment through their son’s sporting achievements, some parents have turned their backs on age-old ways of dialogue and partnership between parents and schools.’
The principal bemoaned the fact that an excellent sports program was now being threatened by a small group of unhappy parents.
Rondebosch is well known for its achievements on the rugby field, and this creates a lot of competition amongst the youngsters to join the teams. It’s therefore sad when parents take their entitlement out on school representatives. While schools often have to deal with the scourge of bullying, it’s doubly sad when it’s the parents doing the bullying.
Just because you are a big shot in the corporate world, doesn’t mean your child deserves a place on the team.
