While this restaurant was ranked as the 75th-best restaurant in the world – a notable drop from 37th in the 2022 ranking – according to the World’s 50 Best Restaurant Awards, it is considered the best restaurant in South Africa as well as the whole of Africa.
Fyn (pronounced fain) retained its impressive position as one of the top eateries in the world, serving a menu inspired by Japan and featuring ingredients sourced from the Western Cape area.
This year, no South African restaurants made the top 50 Best Restaurants In The World, but Fyn did win big for something a little different. For 2023, Fyn has been crowned with the Flor de Caña Sustainable Restaurant Award 2023, making it the most sustainable restaurant in the world, per BusinessTech:
“With over 50 per cent of Fyn’s menu readily suitable for vegetarians or vegans and endemic vegetables taking centre stage, the restaurant is doubling down on its sustainable philosophy while also upholding the highest standards of flavour and technique, making it a worthy winner of the Flor de Caña Sustainable Restaurant Award 2023,” the awards said.
Claps all around:
Owner, founder and executive chef Peter Tempelhoff says that the “huge” award was a little “unexpected”:
…”and I feel a little unprepared for it… but it does lay the gauntlet down for us to continue on our current trajectory with every fibre of the restaurant’s being.
To continue our work with the communities, the fishermen, the farmers, the foragers and of course our dedicated staff who we’ve grown so close to over the past few years is the real reason why we’ve won this fantastic award, and I dedicate this to them.”
The most expensive Dinner Menu will set a customer back R1 875 excluding the R1 350 wine pairing, which comes with grilled springbok leg, smoked mussel chawanmushi, and Ikejime yellowtail:
La Colombe, Cape Town’s favourite modern French-meets-Asian restaurant, ranked 94th on the list, down from last year’s 56th position.
These were the only two South African restaurants that made the list after Paternoster-based Wolfgat dropped out of the top 100, having come 90th in 2022.
Salsify at the RoundHouse in Camp Bay won the fifth annual Luxe Restaurant Awards but did not feature in the World’s 50 Best Restaurant Awards, and neither did LivingRoom at the Summerhill Guest Estate, despite winning Restaurant of the Year at the Eat Out Awards and its Chef Johannes Richer winning Chef of the Year at the Luxe Awards.
There’s always next year…
