“Can you f—ing believe what just happened to us?” said a Florida deputy to the motorist that he tried to save before they were both swept into a drain pipe under a massive highway.

Much like Cape Town, a torrential downpour caused massive flooding in Escambia, Florida last week, and this cop and motorist are lucky to have survived being dragged under the water there for a moment on Friday.

Body camera footage shows the heart-stopping moment when William Hollingsworth was sucked through a drainage pipe while on his rescue mission.

The BBC reported that both men were dragged underneath the four-lane highway, before resurfacing on the other side, safe and well, 30 seconds later. The Toronto Sun reported that they were dragged along a 30-metre pipe.

In the video, you can see the deputy getting out of his vehicle to help the citizen trapped in rising waters at the side of a highway and then the camera goes black before they both cry out in relief to have made it out alive. The action starts at the 1:40 mark:

The Daily Mail reported that the civilian David Boss left work and was making his way through water that was chest-deep on Highway 98 when he got pulled into the drain which is designed to get rid of excess groundwater.

The current was strong enough to suck both grown men underwater:

“Can you f—ing believe what just happened to us? You OK bud? Can you believe what f—ing happened to us. Just breathe. Oh my god, thank you Jesus! Oh Jesus. I never held my breath like this in my life,” Hollingsworth could be heard saying.

Hollingsworth said on the radio, “I got sucked in the f—king drain pipe and I went all the way under Highway 98 and got spit out.”

Boss said his life flashed before his eyes while the police say they are both “lucky to be alive”.
