FlySafair flew the South African colours high at the Best Low-Cost Airline in Africa at this year’s SKYTRAX World Airline Awards, coming in first place for the third consecutive year.
The biggest surprise however was South African Airways’ 72nd spot among the top 100 airlines in the world.
FlySafair managed to beat out fellow budget airlines such as Fastjet, Nouvelair, fly540, and Jambojet at the glittery ceremony held in Paris, France.
A beaming Kirby Gordon, the Chief Marketing Officer at FlySafair, accepted the award on behalf of the airline, saying that it is a testament to the FlySafair team’s “unwavering dedication to enhancing the travel experience.”
“Receiving this recognition at the highest level underscores the commitment and excellence exhibited by their staff on a daily basis.”
The wins are a boost for the struggling airline industry in South Africa. SAA in particular has had a tumultuous time keeping its birds in the air, and despite coming in 79th place last year, the airline seems to be taking off again.
The winners of this year’s awards were Singapore Airlines, who came in second place last year, and Qatar Airways, who landed second, despite being first in 2022.
The World’s Best Cabin Crew Award went to Indonesian airline Garuda for the sixth time in a row.
The World Airline Awards originated in 1999 when Skytrax introduced its first-ever global annual airline customer satisfaction survey. These esteemed awards are determined through an extensive customer satisfaction survey conducted by Skytrax each year.
