If Thomas Finney from Thomas Finney Studios has his way, all the dudes in your office would be dressed like Steve from Minecraft this coming season.
Ok, so I may not be the most fashion-forward person on the planet, but I know that white pants are never cool, and I don’t own any K-Way jackets, so please forgive me for asking whether fashion has finally tripped over the line that separates it from art.
After all, you’re not going to wear your Pierneef painting as a skirt, so can some of the recent ‘pushing of boundaries’ be called fashion? Or art? Or both?
The Thomas Finney Studio recently released its collection inspired by the Roman ruler, Emperor Hadrian. Because why not? The ‘pieces’ are sold as a ‘show strength and masculinity’ with items such as a quilted bust, enhanced shorts, and a snapback crown in brown leather.
Steve in other words.
Don’t think me a pleb for my derision of these fashion items. I once dated a fashion designer and am well aware of showstoppers and the WOW effect. Those items often come with batteries and the model is usually followed around by someone with a fire extinguisher. But these latest offerings are advertised for sale, meaning someone out there is just itching to get their hands on a $4000 (R72 000) hardened leather ball-cupping broek. Matching accessories also include a leather bag and a condom ring card case. Stylish, no?
For those mourning the death of comfortable clothes, the collection also comes in ‘sad’.
Now don’t get me wrong, I like leather as much as any other non-vegan, but I just can’t see myself in any of these this summer. Maybe next.Until then, if you want designer leather products that are both beautiful and functional, you can check out Burgundy Collective’s range of handcrafted leather goods, made with local materials and quality craftsmanship.

Now doesn’t that look a bit more like something you would wear out in public?
