The Recording Academy, the organisation behind the Grammy Awards, has now amended its rules to allow for AI to be used in music, although they have drawn the line on ‘fully AI’ Music.
The Recording Academy announced Friday that artists can use AI in their songs and submit them for consideration for an award, as long as there is a “meaningful” human authorship component in the work. Despite the allowance, only ‘human creators’ will be eligible for awards.
In addition to this, artists will be required to contribute at least 20% in the creation of the material for consideration. Frankly, this seems a bit on the low side…
The move comes after the recent explosion of AI-generated tracks, amongst others a new Beatles song that had even Paul McCartney smiling. The experimental use of technology in music has been around for decades, otherwise, there would be no celebrity DJ pushing random buttons at Coachella.
Tracks like ‘Heart on My Sleeve’, which used AI to add vocals from Drake and The Weeknd garnered millions of plays, going viral online before eventually being taken down after complaints of copyright infringement from Universal Music Group.
The rise of TikTok artists has made AI use so much more popular in the last few months, giving rise to accounts that focus on ‘AI cover songs’ by famous artists, such as the below Ariana Grande ‘cover’.

Some artists are embracing AI though, such as the Beatles legend who announced a new Beatles song in the pipeline that will use AI to reproduce the band’s signature sound, including the late John Lennon’s voice.
“It’s kind of scary but exciting, because it’s the future. We’ll just have to see where that leads.”
McCartney used AI to isolate Lennon’s vocals from a demo in order to make the track.
With the next Grammy’s to take place in February 2024, we’ll have to wait and see if artists hand over much of their creativity to machines.
