It would appear that birds of a feather do indeed flock together after it was revealed that the convicted rapist and murderer, Thabo Bester, is being represented by a lawyer who is himself being charged with sexual assault.
In this latest sick twist to the Bester saga, his instructing attorney will appear on charges of attempted rape and assault a day after representing his client in court.
The case against the 27-year-old lawyer, who cannot be identified until he pleads, was registered in March at the Bainsvlei police station in Bloemfontein. Even M. Night Shyamalan can’t make this shit up.
As expected from our justice system’s slap-on-the-wrist attitude to sexual violence, the lawyer is currently out on R1,000 bail and is being represented by Bester’s main attorney Advocate Jeremiah Phela. At least we can still name one of his lawyers.
Phela is now left to cover the media stumps by himself and has been quoted as saying “No no no, unfortunately I don’t have a comment, I can’t give a comment at all.”
You can’t really say anything at this stage, to be honest. This whole Thabo Bester fiasco writes its own script as we lurch from one bombshell revelation to another. It is an orgy of incompetence, corruption, arrogance, and death.
Thabo Bester is like a disease that contaminates everyone he comes in contact with. If it’s not his ‘socialite doctor’ trying to be released, it’s his lawyer on trial for rape. It is a horrific indictment of our prisons, the justice system, and the people who are tasked with protecting us from rapists and murderers.
Maybe Bheki Cele will learn something from his jaunt to China. Then again, he doesn’t strike us as someone who is able to learn anything. For now, we just have to wait and see if the justice system survives this latest waterboarding at the hands of the people tasked with protecting us from rapists and murderers.
Don’t hold your breath.
