There has been a huge increase in the number of South Africans that are ‘getting the hell out of the country’ in the last two years, and despite this not coming as a surprise to anyone, the actual numbers (and loss in taxes) is painting a frightening picture.
The reasons people are leaving are also not new to anyone who lives here. Escalations in unemployment rates, stagnant economic growth, and diplomatic and political uncertainty – fueled by the worst loading shedding on record – can easily be identified as the reasons why those who can afford it, leave.
But this time the ones who go aren’t ridiculed for their ‘cowardice and anti-ubuntu’ vibes. And unfortunately for us, they represent a large group of high nett worth individuals (HNWI). These are the people our socialist unions refer to as the bourgeois, or rich whites.
But to most people who live in poverty because of the dumbass policy decisions ‘the alliance’ makes, they are simply known as the ones who keep the social grants coming. Sounds harsh? Good. It should be a harsh reminder that the very people who are leaving are the ones who pay taxes that benefit (supposedly) the poor. You know. That stuff government loves to spend on cars, houses, and private security.
But back to the emigration numbers.
“Over the past two years, we have seen quite a big jump in the number of candidates expressing their interest in seeking opportunities overseas,” said JP Breytenbach, the Director of Breytenbachs Immigration Consultants.
He added that South Africans have frequently cited a lack of growth opportunities in South Africa as a driving factor for their decision to move their families abroad. These folks are heading to countries such as the US, UK and Australia. The UK alone has an estimated quarter of a million Saffa’s living there now, and despite what the idiots in government want to believe, they are from every racial group in South Africa.
White and Black South Africans are equally gatvol of incompetence and willful economic sabotage. Note willful as it is abundantly clear that the ANC seem to only implement ideas that will do damage to either our economy or social cohesion.
The latest data from SARS shows that, over the last five years, over 40,500 taxpayers have ended their tax residency in South Africa. Around 2 700 of these individuals earned more than R500 000 per year, and 1 100 earned more than R1 Million per year – amounting to R1.3 Billion in assessed tax.
Additionally, Henley & Partners’ latest Wealth Migration Report 2023 showed South Africa saw 400 High Net-Worth Individuals (HNWI) emigrate in 2022, with 500 expected to leave in 2023.
HNWI’s are defined as people with a net worth of over US$1 million (approximately R19 Million).
So ja, the ones who can afford to leave are doing so, and they are joined by the people who have skills that we need, but don’t value. The ones who cannot afford to go to London or Perth are left wondering what disastrous piece of legislation or policy will be implemented next.
Ironically, most of the folks who left are doing the same, and may just be one or two productive policies away from coming back.
People are not leaving South Africa because the weather is bad and the people are unfriendly. They are leaving because the ruling government is incompetent and has the economic insight of an empty milk bottle.
We need the skills and the taxes, not incompetence and corruption.
Next year voters will have to decide which of the two has a place in our country.
