Most mere mortals are terrified of the rapid rise of artificial intelligence because the tools are threatening to take over jobs and even whole industries, but honestly, I think we have more (or less) to worry about than we may have initially thought.
AI seems to do some loopy, horror-filled uncanny valley stuff when asked to depict people eating and enjoying common activities, like watching sports or chowing Italian cuisine.
The results are mortifying but also perhaps reassuring since we surely cannot (and will not) let AI-generated content take over on this freaky basis. Overall, it is clear that the evolving technology is striking all kinds of fear into the hearts of the people.
BlogTO found a new AI-generated Toronto Blue Jays commercial blowing up on social media for its sheer horror, showing how AI turns automated facsimiles of human life into something incredibly unsettling.
Josh Shiaman, a senior feature producer at TSN, set out to create an ad using text-to-video AI generation, admitting that the results “did not go well” – which is an understatement, so be warned:
Tried using Text-to-Video AI to generate a @BlueJays commercial and it…um…did not go well…. pic.twitter.com/p3tzH9euUc

Created using an AI-based cloud editing program called RunwayML, Shiaman said that the video “was a bit of an accident”:
“My intent was just to experiment and create a commercial for Blue Jays baseball. But some of my benign prompts created some very horrifying (and unintentionally hilarious) results.”
Shiaman says he used a fairly simple text prompt, entering “Young Blue Jays fans eating hot dogs with ketchup and mustard,” and would shortly thereafter conclude that the “AI interpretation went somewhat askew.”
It is pure nightmare fuel seeing the realistic-enough-looking stadium crowds morph into ketchup-stained kids eating each other’s polony-looking arms, batting helmets that spew cherry slushies, and youngsters drinking from ketchup and mustard geysers.
I just wanted to show happy kids eating hot dogs at a ballgame. It went sideways.

Josh. I am never going to be able to unsee this. It’s worse than a fevered dream.

Even the weird Jays logo shown in the video is completely off, which someone quite enjoyed:

As mentioned before, AI really has no clue how to depict people eating normally, with the results always turning into some kind of horror show:
@danleveille Replying to @spookyscience AI people eat pizza off the ground (made with #midjourney v4 — it’s less horrific with v5. ) #ai #aiart #aiartcommunity #aiartwork #aiartist #greenscreen ♬ Italian Tarantella – Italian Restaurant Music of Italy
The next Gen of AI prompters take note; no eating to be mentioned ever again, please.
