We’re all paying attention to a 12-year-old boy from Paarl impressing the internet with his incredible voice.
Yonwaba Qetswana has risen to prominence thanks to his sweet rendition of Beyoncé’s hit song ‘Listen’ which began circulating on Facebook recently.
Over 4,8 million people have fallen head over heels for the youngster dressed in his school uniform and singing earnestly to the camera after rap artist Durane Plaatjies posted the video on his arts and culture page DOEP TV.
YOU reported that Yonwaba is thrilled that his talent has touched the hearts of so many people, but he wasn’t at all expecting it.
The Paarl boy says he was just nine when he discovered his voice and while being initially quite shy to capture his talent on video for the world to see, his confidence has since ballooned.
A lot of his training comes from being in the school choir and church choir where he sings soprano.
Yonwaba’s mother, Noluthando is just as excited by his new-found fame and says her son started showing an interest in singing when he was barely out of nappies. In fact, she notes the entire family has the ability to sing.
Durane was introduced to Yonwaba by his colleagues who work with children in sports and the arts and try to give them a platform and knew from the minute he heard the boy that he would become big:
“The exact words I said to him before I even took the video was, ‘Listen, let’s make you famous.’ I took the video, uploaded it on my page, and the rest is history.”
Too precious for words:
Durane confined that he would do his best to provide as much support as he can to other fledgling musicians. For now, Yonwaba will be performing at the Cape Town Minstrels in January while there are other performances in the works.
The seventh grader is also releasing an amapiano single titled ‘Kholwa’ (which means ‘Believe’) on June 30. Watch the space.
