What’s the deal with all the recent videos of people unboxing ‘mystery packages’ bought from the dark web?
For those of you unenlightened about the darker corner of the internet, the dark web is essentially a hidden part of the internet. It contains browsers for illegal sites that let you buy stolen details and drugs or access even darker things like illicit images and some very nasty videos.
It’s not actually illegal to use, but it’s a minefield of dodginess that is best left alone.
As we know, if there is a potential for danger or disaster, or death, someone will make a TikTok or Youtube video about it.
These mystery boxes are supposedly bought from the dark web, and even the people who order them have no idea what they contain, but considering it’s from the part of the internet where you can buy a new lung, it most likely doesn’t contain an alpaca wool scarf and some M&M’s.
They resorted to forking out hundreds of dollars for “mystery boxes” from darkweb marketplaces — filming their surprise, disappointment or shock.
A Youtuber who goes by the name of CryptoNWO has been cracking up the views recently with his unboxing videos. Advising viewers “Don’t eat before unboxing dark web mystery boxes,” this guy has been on the receiving end of children’s shoes, a clown puppet, cat ornaments, a bullet casing, and a radio.
But these items don’t make for viral videos and every so often a box arrives with disturbing items such as teeth in jars, animal organs in sandwich bags, medical texts, live fish, or creepy dolls. It is these items that lend the imagination to all kinds of creepy origin stories.
TikTok’s Red Mask is currently reaching up to 16.2 million views from a single video on his unboxing page, so obviously dabbling in the dark web is not just profitable for paedophiles, hitmen, and psychopaths.
Red Mask became intrigued after watching other influencers unbox these packages, and ever since, he has been ordering them. If you think it is a bit reckless, you’re right, as the Youtuber recently received a letter included in a box that was from someone claiming to be his birth mother.
The letter had details about his life that only he knows and ended with an ominous promise to “keep an eye on him”. What was even more disconcerting was the fact that the letter and boxes were delivered to his home address. So someone on the dark web who claims to be your mom, as well as sending you jars of teeth, knows where you live.
Sleep tight tonight Youtuber.
Now if you are thinking about getting your own mystery box delivered to your front door, good luck. None of the content creators that do unboxing videos are able, or willing, to reveal how they order these curious packages. This has even led some to speculate that it could be an ‘inside gimmick’ between these viral superstars.
Either way, it’s best to stay away from these dodgy places. That probably holds true for the dark web, as well as viral videos. But for those curious cats out there, check out the below unboxing and decide for yourself to see if it is a real mystery or just another Youtube fad.
