Princess Diana’s cheeky sense of humour is well known, and a series of letters written to Constantine II, the last king of Greece, shows the world’s favourite royal had a proper stout side to her.
The signed cards went up for sale at the Dominic Winter Auctioneers auction house after the late king’s death at 82 earlier this year.
The two cards were sold on May 17 for a bid of $7,000 (R135 000).
The risqué cards, published by the GirlsTalk card series around the year 1987, each contained a humorous adult cartoon with a racy punchline. It’s your classic ‘naughty’ cards.
The captions read:
“What’s the definition of the Perfect Man? A midget with a 10″ tongue who can breathe through his ears!”
“Adam came first … Men always do!”
Diana signed the cards in her typical loopy style, and shows a close friendship between the Greek king and British princess.
According to the auction house’s website, the reason the Princess of Wales sent these letters to the former king — a relative and friend who was 19 years her senior — is unclear, speculating that they may have stemmed from an inside joke that began during a previous gathering of royal families.
Fondly known as ‘Tino’, King Constantine ruled Greece from 1964 until the monarchy was abolished in 1973. The de-throned ruler had ties to the British royal family, being the first cousin once removed from Queen Elizabeth’s husband, Prince Philip.
But in all honesty, aren’t most royals ‘relatives’ in a way? Constantine was also the godfather of Diana’s eldest son, Prince William, while Philip and Diana were later named godparents to the youngest son of Tino and Anne-Marie of Denmark, Prince Philippos of Greece and Denmark, born 1986.
Diana is still seen by many as the ‘real queen’, even though the beloved princess died in a car crash in 1997. Little memories like this just remind us of how ‘human’ she was, and how much she is missed by the world.
