A young girl whose disappearance was featured on a Netflix documentary entitled “Unsolved Mysteries” was found alive and well in North Carolina last week, six years after she was allegedly abducted by her mother.
Kayla Unbehaun went missing in 2017 after she was believed to be abducted while in the care of her mother, Heather Unbehaun. Her disappearance was featured recently on the Netflix doccie as part of a series of involving alleged family abductions.
Kayla, who was nine, was last seen in her mother’s care following a parade in Wheaton, Illinois, for the Fourth of July in 2017. Mr Iskerka was supposed to meet Unbehaun to pick up his daughter in a court-ordered exchange, but the pair never showed up.
Her father, Ryan Iskerka, started a GoFundme page where he spoke about Unbehaun’s phone having been turned off and her social media cancelled, with only her closest family members indicating that she went on a camping trip to an unknown location in Wisconsin.
The page was set up to raise funds so the family could hire a private investigator and any additional costs concerning the search for Kayla.
The search came to an end last week when a woman at a clothing shop in Asheville recognised the teen in a publication. The lady contacted the authorities and the lost child and her mom were found soon afterwards.Father and daughter were finally reunited after six years.
“I’m overjoyed that Kayla is home safe. We ask for privacy as we get to know each other again and navigate this new beginning.”
Heather Unbehaun is expected to be extradited to Illinois where she will face charges. For now, at least her father has a chance to get to know his now teenage daughter. You can watch a WTHR report on her disappearance below.
