For those of you outside the EU and its strange obsession with Eurovision, singer Loreen has managed to secure a historic seventh win for Sweden in the carnival-like freakshow that was Eurovision 2023.
Loreen, whose real name is Lorine Talhaoui, beat out 25 competitors in the finale of the world’s biggest live music event, hosted by Britain, on behalf of war-torn Ukraine.
The win means that Sweden gets to host next year’s competition on the 50th anniversary of ABBA’s win with Waterloo.
More than 160 million viewers watched the spectacle live as the competition erupted in a blaze of colour and some very strange characters. And because it was live, there were all kinds of unexpected moments.
Have a look at some of the more memorable acts, including a strange scene where a woman churns the hell out of butter as she lewdly winks at viewers while some guy toasts her antics as if standing next to a braai.
Eurovision resembles a carnival more than a competition.

To add a bit of royal glamour to the event, Princess Kate also surprised fans as she played a ditty on the piano in a beautiful blue frock, the colour specifically chosen to show solidarity with the Ukranian people.
It seemed like Europe had a gay old time, but you can’t help but think that this is what the world would look like if LSD was legal everywhere.
