Finland’s prime minister Sanna Marin announced that she and her husband have filed for divorce, saying that she was grateful for the 19 years that they spent together.
She revealed the news in an Instagram story, adding that she is “still best friends” with her husband Markus Raikkonen, and confirmed that “we will continue to spend time together as a family”, referring to their five-year-old daughter as well.
While The Independent stuck to the divorce news, Fox News sneakily brought up the “slurry of controversial partying videos”, suggesting that they may have had something to do with the divorce.
At 37 years old, Marin is one of Europe’s youngest leaders, having taken office at the age of 34 in 2019.
While The Independent notes her Cabinet’s success in handling the COVID-19 pandemic, giving praise for her prominent role, along with President Sauli Niinistö, in advocating for Finland’s successful application to join Nato, Fox News reckons she’s had a “tumultuous” time:
Last month, she lost her bid for re-election in a razor-thin race against her conservative and far-right rivals, which prompted some to question whether her controversial partying videos were behind her and her party’s defeat.
The politics of the publications are made clear.
Fox references the video that surfaced in August showing the young prime minister dancing in a nightclub with a Finnish pop star known as Olavi Uusivirta:
A new video of Prime Minister Sanna Marin’s “party scandal” appeared in Finland today.
Seiska writes that Marin, who is married and has been in that relationship for 18 years, was seen in many questionable situations.

The outlet said that the two dancing closely raised questions regarding extramarital relations and also whether the prime minister was using drugs – mostly because the phrase “flour gang” was reportedly used by someone in the background of the video.
Marin agreed to a drug test eventually, which showed up clean, even though she condemned the lack of privacy and also maintained that “nothing inappropriate” occurred between her and the singer in the video:
“I don’t remember anyone kissing my neck. It seems to me that I was being talked to,” she said when asked about a moment in the video when Uusivirta appeared to lean into the prime minister.
“It is true that I am married. These are private matters, and I will not comment on them,” she added, according to an Independent report. “But I don’t think anything inappropriate happens in that video.”
The incident sparked a debate about her right to a private life, with Marin saying that she “resents these became known to the public”, adding they were filmed in a private space.
Either way, she’s still relatively popular and living her life as she pleases, which she should by all means.
