US President Joe Biden has announced a climate change crackdown on water-guzzling dishwashers.
In a bid to slash water use in the US by more than a third, the American government wants to limit the volume of water used by dishwashers, and experts are saying that Britain could follow suit soon.
New rules in the first-world country state that models sold from 2027 will have to use a maximum of 3,2 gallons of water per cycle, which is much less than the current limit of five gallons.
The Telegraph is freaking out about this ever so slightly, basically revealing how these new climate change policies will pretty much change the way people live their lives. Yup, sorry folks, no more luxury conveniences when the world is dying around you.
In Britain, the Government has committed to reaching net zero by 2050 with new laws incoming that will ban gas boilers and polluting vehicles, along with rules dictating minimum energy efficiency standards.
The Government currently plans to force manufacturers to label white goods with their water efficiency in order to weed expensive-to-run machines out of the market. But campaign groups have warned that such measures may be escalated if not successful – and homes may be banned from installing the water-intensive dishwashers in future.
Dishwashers are among the most water-intensive appliances in the home, which is why water labels are necessary, said Nathan Richardson, of charity Waterwise.
He said that the aim will be for the market to move in the direction of more efficient products, and if market-led initiatives did not succeed, rules forcing new-builds or retrofits to install certain models of dishwashers could be considered.
While regulation of water usage is “already happening” in the UK per Andrew Montford of Net Zero Watch, it is highly likely that ministers could follow the policy changes in the US. Only so long until South Africa also follows suit…
They almost came for our pools, they should go for the yachts, and now they’re cracking down on our dishes.
Folks who have gotten used to a machine doing their dirty dishes will have to find new ways to manage.
