A police officer in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. is counting his blessings after barely avoiding a speeding car that crashed near him on the highway.
The officer was in the middle of a traffic stop when an out-of-control car came speeding at him from across the road, crashing into the car he was checking and narrowly missing the officer, who managed to scuttle to safety.
The whole incident was captured on dashcam video, with the Fairfax County police chief confirming that no one was killed or seriously injured, per NBC News.
“It’s just miraculous,” Chief Kevin Davis said at a news conference.
According to Davis, the BMW was going over 120 mph (193 kilometres per hour) in a 50 mph (80 kph) zone.
That BMW, a high-performance M3, hit the larger sedan and then spun into a Fairfax County patrol vehicle, video shows. The officer’s right leg appeared to have been struck or brushed.
“Cool, calm and collected, he hops over that guardrail and immediately gets on the radio,” Davis said.
Brace yourself:
Three teenagers in the M3 essentially walked away with minor injuries, and the 17-year-old driver was cited for alleged reckless driving.
The officer and the driver of the other BMW were also treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
Davis said it was going to be quite the story to tell when the officer comes round to it, but right now, he is just relishing being alive.
Those teens can also count themselves lucky for not killing a policeman.
