Well, it sums up the state of our nation quite nicely when the national flag attempts to assassinate the president.
President Cyril Ramaphosa got the bejesus scared out of him when a South African flagpole toppled over behind him while our toothless leader was having a media moment with the Finnish Prime Minister.
Seeing our beloved flag topple because of some faulty mounting doesn’t really come as a surprise to most people outside of the corridors of power, but the jerky hand flapping that Cyril spasmed out once again proved that the president hardly ever looks around him, or is aware of anything until it crashes down around him.
Like the economy, Eskom, SEO’s etc. The list is longer than even Nathi Mthethwa’s planned 100-metre flagpole, which would have taken half of the audience out with it had he managed his pricey erection.
President Ramaphosa was fortunately unharmed and even managed a giggle as he quipped “That was quick”, while a protection officer rushed onstage to grab the renegade flagpole.
The whole scene is almost comedic as the clanging and rattle of the flagpole mounting can be heard over the oohs and ahhs of the attendees. All that was missing is the sound of a cat meowing in the background and we have a serious contender for a SNL sketch.
Time to put out a tender for a new flagpole supplier. In the meantime take a look at the video:
