There is quite a number of really good options out there for Saffa’s hoping to escape the nightmare that is Eskom, and at the price of a small house in Cape Town, you can now own your very own Scottish Island.
Barlocco Island, off the southern coast of Scotland, has recently been listed at a very affordable price of £150,000 (R3.3 million) and with the 25-acre island being completely uninhabited by anything besides wildlife.
It may just be the perfect place to hide out during the next pandemic or until the ANC fixes Eskom, or drags the country into the abyss with it. Whichever comes first.
The nearest town is about 9 kilometres away, and the closest train station is Dumfries, which is about an hour’s bus drive from your peaceful slice of cloudy heaven.
With lush green grass and rocky outcrops stretching to the sea, the island covers an area of about 25 acres, but there are no buildings on it, only a flood pond providing water for livestock and wildlife in the winter months.
At low tide, you will also be able to reach the island on foot while the rest of the time the pebble beach is perfect for anchoring your boat. According to the estate agents, the area is well known for its fauna and flora and boasts a collection of rare wildlife, including great black-backed gulls, and rare plants such as rock sea-lavender and fragrant orchid.
While everyone is fleeing to Mauritius as a second home, it might be a good idea to invest somewhere a little further away, and although Scotland is not known for its wonderful weather, there is an air of mystery and romance that still lingers around the country and its many islands.“There’s still a very romantic sentiment attached to owning your very own Scotƫish private island, where you can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy some peace and tranquillity in the most beautiful scenery around.”
You can check out the full listing here.
If moving to an uninhabited island is a bit too much for you, you might as well have a look the some of the best private islands for rent according to CNN. Some of these will set you back the price of an entire island, but others are quite affordable even if you are paying in ZAR.
