An ‘iPhone Theory’ has gone viral on TikTok and it might just give followers of the hit HBO series a clue as to who the real villain is in the saga of the Roy family.

It’s heavy on spoilers, so if you haven’t seen the latest episode yet, maybe give this one a skip.

By now most fans will be quietly processing the revelation of Logan Roys ‘fatal medical emergency on a flight to Sweden’ – something that was subtly hinted at on the season four poster – where in the upper right corner of Succession’s Season four art, there is an aeroplane in the reflection of the sky.

But fans of the series have now grabbed onto another ‘product placement’ that may be very telling.

According to those in the industry, Apple is very fussy when it comes to who uses their phones onscreen, and for most television and films, bad guys are not allowed to use iPhones.

“Apple… they let you use iPhones in movies but — and this is very pivotal if you’re ever watching a mystery movie — bad guys cannot have iPhones on camera.”

If this holds true, the characters’ phones in Succession might just be the most obvious easter egg yet.

Let’s apply this to “Connor’s Wedding.” In Episode 3, Kendall, Shiv, Roman, and Cousin Greg use iPhones; meanwhile, Tom uses an Android. Phones are a major part of this episode, as the communication leading up to Logan’s death takes place over the phone.

According to the TikTok sleuth, there was quite a bit of emphasis on the character’s phones during the episode, and since Tom seems to be the only guy who isn’t using FaceTime, we can guess what that means.

Tom being represented as a villain by using an Android makes sense since he betrayed Shiv and may need to take matters into his own hands to take over the company.

Gerri, who is Logan’s legal counsel also uses an Android phone, so this might still be another hint at his dodgy intentions, but maybe we should not spread our conspiracy butter too thin.

In 2021, eagle-eyed fan @gigiontherun pointed out how these characters, along with Roman, didn’t use iPhones at the time. Since he became closer to the Roy siblings, he got a new phone!

Whether the ‘iPhone theory’ holds true, for a series that has as many twists as a koeksister, will be interesting to see. For now, all we can do is wait for the next episode and keep a sharp eye out for the Android baddies. Listen to TikTok theory below, and make up your own mind.
