A woman must have seen her life flash before her eyes when she plunged her car 180 metres off Chapman’s Peak Drive in Cape Town on Monday.
The dedicated teams of professionals and volunteers from Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) rushed to the scene after the 43-year-old woman driving towards Hout Bay took a steep stumble down the slope.
TimesLIVE reports that WSAR “navigated steep terrain to access the patient” who they managed to haul to safety soon after 4 PM.
It’s reported that the patient had been able to exit the vehicle but was unable to walk any further, due to sustained injuries. She was taken to the hospital as soon as she was removed from the edge of the mountain.
WSAR spokesperson David Nel confirmed that the team were dispatched to the scene around 2PM:
“It’s inspiring to see such a large group of professionals and volunteers from multiple services working together in such a complicated environment,” said Nel. This was a demanding scenario made less difficult by having access to so many competent rescue specialists at one scene.”
“It’s always a pleasure working alongside the City of Cape Town fire and rescue services, Western Cape department of health and wellness, health emergency medical services (EMS), Life Healthcare and the National Sea Rescue Institute.”
The woman was hauled to the road on a stretcher while rescue teams on the road rigged a technical rope system anchored to one of the city’s fire and rescue vehicles to get her car back up top.
Even an EMS drone was used to monitor and provide feedback on the rescue efforts below. Overall, the rescue operation took about two and a half hours.
This is following a more tragic rescue effort by WSAR when just over a week ago the team carried the deceased body of a hiker from the bottom of the cliffs above Boyes Drive in Muizenberg.
