A sign of things to come for the British royal family was pretty obvious back in 2019 when Meghan Markle spoke to Tom Bradby during the couple’s royal visit to South Africa.
Now, Prince Harry and Meghan’s fallout with the royal family is pervasive – a little boring – and well-documented, thanks to his deep-delving memoir Spare and their tell-all Netflix show.
Before the couple started speaking so openly and persistently about the effects the British media have had on their livelihoods, the ITV documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, following the newlyweds’ tour of part of the continent, caught the first time Meghan had shared her unhappiness.
Hello! Magazine revealed the behind-the-scenes details of the interview, in which she became “visibly emotional” in front of presenter Bradby as she admitted her short stint in the royal family had been “hard”.
Now, former ITN editorial director Chris Shaw has reflected on the broadcaster’s headline-grabbing interview with the Duchess, saying the “little conversation in South Africa” seemed “so outlandishly unexpected and shocking”.
Mr Shaw, who announced his departure from the company in January after 25 years, also said there is a “contradiction” between the Sussexes’ desire for privacy and their willingness to speak about their private lives.
Mr Shaw said he and the team instantly knew the footage was “explosive”, saying that “we knew we had something pretty extraordinary”.
After this interview, the royal couple moved across the pond and pitted a more public campaign against the royal family and the British media.
Mr Shaw added: “I feel a bit sorry for them because I think they’re in the eye of the most appalling storm and they didn’t mean to go there.”

Now that you’re sufficiently yawned out, go off and enjoy your mini-Friday before the long weekend.
