The body of a hiker was recovered from the bottom of the cliffs above Boyes Drive, Muizenberg on Thursday, March 30.
It is reported that the female Muizenberg resident died from her injuries after falling while hiking, with the Wilderness Search And Rescue (WSAR) teams locating and retrieving her body.
IOL reported that the WSAR teams and volunteers were dispatched to Boyes Drive late on Thursday after being notified by SAPS that a hiker had fallen.
The rescue organisation posted about the tragedy on Facebook:
The team used a host of new technology to retrieve the fallen hiker:
“A drone from the Western Cape Government – Health Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Drone Unit was used to locate the patient. Once the patient’s location had been identified, team members hiked up to the scene. The deceased was placed onto a stretcher.
“The Terra Tamer, a high-tech all-terrain wheel, was attached to the stretcher and teams were able to quickly carry the body down the mountain. Once off the mountain, the remains were taken into the care of Forensic Pathology,” WSAR said.
According to WSAR spokesperson David Nel, this piece of equipment is a game changer as it requires fewer team members who are able to move significantly faster, even in challenging technical terrain.
Details around the tragedy, like the reason for her fall, whether she was an experienced hiker or not, and her name, have not been revealed as of yet.
Condolences go out to grieving family members and friends.
