Grab a friend who is stuck on twee-hipsterdom, because their main man Wes Anderson has a new trés Wes Anderson movie.
We all thought that Wes couldn’t get more Anderson with The French Dispatch – which was the ultimate decoupaged scrapbook of all things WA – but we were wrong.
The hipster headman has released the trailer for his new flick, Asteroid City, which looks and feels exactly how you’d think a coming-of-age movie about stargazing in the desert would look if it was through his smudgy-saturated, glossily-composed lens.
The Verge notes that the movie plays directly to all of Anderson’s strengths and is going to give all of his fans exactly what they showed up for:
“which is to say that for all its fixation on 20th-century Americana and stylishness that borders on being twee, it’ll be a heartwarming parable aimed squarely at people who love a bit of kitsch with their prestige.”
Asteroid City takes place in a fictional American desert town circa 1955: the itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention (organised to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition) is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events, according to the official synopsis:
There’s the stargazing competition, sure. But there are also strange earthquakes that no one knows the true cause of, fears about whether aliens might be lurking among the humans living in Asteroid City, and multiple sightings of a celebrity (Scarlett Johansson) — all of which seem to be keeping Asteroid City’s characters in a constant state of excitement.
The cast list is appropriately star-spangled.

Jason Schwartzman plays a beleaguered widower who’s schlepping his four children across the country to see their grandfather (Tom Hanks plays this role because a movie isn’t WA without him) when their car suddenly breaks down.
There are also a few other usual culprits making their obligatory appearances. Asteroid City also stars Margot Robbie, Jake Ryan, Hong Chau, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Ed Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Stephen Park, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, Willem Dafoe, Tony Revolori, Grace Edwards, Aristou Meehan, Sophia Lillis, Ethan Lee, Jeff Goldblum, and Rita Wilson.
Lap it up:
Astroid City will hit theatres on June 16.
