Convicted killer and all-around lying turd, Donovan Moodley, has changed his version of events once again as he tries to get parole for the 2004 murder of Leigh Matthews. This time the resident of Johannesburg Prison claims that he shot Matthews because she was screaming.
Quite how this aids his request to be released after only serving 18 years of a life sentence is unsure, but the murderer has now changed his version of events eight times over the course of his imprisonment.
Moodley was convicted in 2005 of murdering the Bond University student in a botched kidnapping attempt. At the time, he demanded R50 000 from Leigh’s parents for the safe return of their daughter.
The Matthews family paid the ransom but Leigh was shot and killed despite this. Moodley pleaded guilty to murder, kidnapping, and extortion after being caught by police soon after.
Moodley spent the next few years trying to get out of prison by changing his story numerous times. He has claimed to have been set up, accidentally killing Leigh as well as claiming the involvement of ‘drug dealers’. At some point, he even claimed to not have been involved at all.
According to News24, it was only when the option of possible parole was raised after 15 years that he sent a half-assed apology to the family of the victim. The Matthews family has obviously opposed his latest bid for freedom.
“You can’t be rehabilitated if you continue to lie.”
Rob and Sharon Matthews’s attorney, Tania Koen, said that ‘the idea of rehabilitation is that the person has changed their ways, but how could Moodley be rehabilitated and still not tell the truth about how the crime was committed and who was involved?’
They have also criticised the parole process, especially the absence of submissions from experts on Moodley’s suitability for parole, as well as why the majority of submissions were on behalf of the applicant.
According to the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), the parole board recommended further profiling and made reference to the need for further psychotherapy to address Moodley’s being motivated by greed and money.
It seems to be a big week for murderers as Oscar is also trying to get out of jail after only spending a few years behind bars.
Unfortunately for the families, the only truth is that Reeva and Leigh are both still dead.
