There is not a weekly news cycle that does not include a mass shooting in the US. It is becoming endemic, and while the world watches on social media, America seems to be helpless to stop it.
The latest shooting has however triggered a new level of outrage as it brings together everything that is tearing America apart.
Police identified Audrey Hale as the shooter that killed six people at The Covenant School in Nashville, Tennessee, The victims include three children and three adults.
“She targeted random students in the school … whoever she came in contact with, she fired rounds.”
Sky News reports that the Nashville resident, and seemingly normal 28-year-old, planned the attack with detailed maps and surveillance, although initial reports indicate the killings were random. According to authorities, there were signs of more attacks planned.
“We have a manifesto, we have some writings that we’re going over that pertain to this date, the actual incident. We have a map drawn out of how this was all going to take place.”
Hale was carrying AR-style weapons and a handgun when she confronted five police officers and was killed in the ensuing shoot-out.
Authorities are still trying to piece together an exact motive for the attack, but so far it appears as if she harboured ‘resentment’ for having attended the school as a youngster.
“She was just one of our young ladies. … She was just a typical co-ed. A typical student.”
The media has been quick to point out that Hale identified as transgender, and with issues around gun control, woke culture, and the newly found religious fervour in the United States, this is going to be a hard blow for politics-weary Americans.
Regardless of the motives, it’s a tragedy that seven people had to die. Again.
Police have released a video of Hale stalking the school hallways, which you can watch below. It’s eerie to watch, so be warned if you are easily triggered.
The Nashville shooting is the 129th mass shooting in America this year. In total, 63 children have died because of the US’s inability to deal with the gun issue.
