A dashboard camera captured the heart-thudding moment a car was sent spinning in the air after being struck by a rogue tyre on a busy California highway.

The dramatic footage shows a dark-coloured Kia Soul hatchback approaching a white Chevy Silverado pickup truck travelling in the middle lane.

Suddenly the small vehicle is launched several metres into the air after the truck’s tire popped off and banged into it.

The wild scene that looked as if it could have been a chase sequence from a Hollywood blockbuster, per the New York Post, was reportedly recorded by a Tesla dashcam last Thursday, March 23, on the 118 Freeway in Chatsworth, Los Angeles.

Anoop Khatra, the driver of the Tesla who recorded the jaw-dropping video, described the accident in a tweet as “the most INSANE car crash.”

Fortunately for the driver, the vehicle landed right side up on its wheels after doing a few flips:

While large chunks of debris were scattered all over the road, the California Highway Patrol said the sole occupant of the mangled Kia Soul suffered only minor injuries.

No one else was hurt, either.

It seems as though a lug nut on the pickup truck sheared off for an unknown reason, causing the tire to detach from the wheel hub, according to officials.

What a scene.
