There’s honestly so much to unpack in this short but incredibly chaotic TikTok video made by director Sofia Coppola’s teen daughter.
In defiance of her famous parents, 16-year-old Romy Mars posted a peak teenage TikTok video to a public account this week.
She said she was doing so because her parents were punishing her for wanting to “charter a helicopter from New York to Maryland on my dad’s credit card because I wanted to have dinner with my camp friend”.
Romy goes on to reveal in the now-deleted TikTok that her mother and father’s (the Phoenix singer Thomas Mars) biggest rule is not having any public social media accounts because they “don’t want me to be a nepotism kid”.
Nepo Babies have been heavily criticised lately for making it into the spotlight thanks to the fame and fortune of their parents and not via their own hard work or true talent.
As if that’s not already a lot to unpack, she then goes on to perform a highly chaotic cooking tutorial for pasta with vodka sauce, admits she doesn’t know the difference between an onion and garlic, and then introduces everyone to her babysitter’s boyfriend, her “replacement parents” “because my parents are never home”.

In 2017, Sofia told The Guardian that she strives to keep her children out of the spotlight because she doesn’t want them to be “jaded” and “never saw the point of taking little kids to movie premieres and stuff”, just wanting them to “have a childhood”.
But Romy might just become a nepo baby after all:
This is so chaotic and adorable. The very Brooklyn boyfriend of babysitter playing with the dog. Attempting a cooking video but not knowing squat. Wanting to visit a camp friend! It’s so normy any era teenager but make it rich and nepo.

I think, because of Sofia’s experience getting DRAGGED when she appeared in that mobster movie really scarred her and now her daughter is getting the brunt of that. It’s too bad because she’s funny, I would have loved her tiktoks

According to the New York Times, more people watched this TikTok than watched the finale of The Last of Us on HBO.
It seems the internet can’t get enough of nepo baby content.
A deleted video from Romy Mars, the daughter of Sofia Coppola and Thomas Mars who has said she is not allowed on social media, garnered more views than “The Last of Us” season finale. https://t.co/YqXAZRsgGe

The Daily Beast makes a pointed argument to “set aside the veil of privilege, the never-ending nepo baby conversation, and the joking teenage inexperience on display” to ” focus on the real issue”: would this well-moneyed teenager actually have been able to get away with chartering her own helicopter?
The answer is no:
A representative for the elite private helicopter service Heliflite told The Daily Beast that the charter company wouldn’t secure a private helicopter journey, say, from NYC to Maryland for a minor: the person booking the flight has to be over the age of 18, and every passenger must provide ID.
There are a bunch of other regulatory rules that would have stopped Romy from going to see her camp friend, so I guess her defiance looks ever more immature now.
Honestly, the better conversation here is about the privilege, wealth, and nepo baby phenomenon.
