It’s interesting what you learn when you spend time with your friends. Particularly when the topic of dating comes up.
The general theme I’ve picked up from these conversations is therapy speak weaving its way into conversations. The dating pool feels interesting nowadays simply because there are so many options to connect with people.
What if on some occasions you end up going on a date with someone who may be fluent in therapy speak? Imagine going on a date thinking it’s going to be casual and the next thing it turns into an unexpected therapy session.
Well according to the New York Times, it seems that therapy speak has officially taken over the dating world. Suppose we may all have certain qualities that we look for in a person. For many, someone with a high level of emotional maturity is worth pursuing.
These days it’s not uncommon to hear the words “ghosting” or “breadcrumbing” to describe the way a potential partner behaves. Now, hearing “boundaries”, “gaslighting” or “trauma bonding” is part of our dating vocab. Suppose this use of words is one of the more interesting dating trends.
Even dating apps like Hinge encourage users to be more open to the app:
“Therapy recently taught me___,”
“A boundary of mine is___”
Who knew that some of these words we use in an intimate setting would slip out into the dating world? Suppose the use of therapy speak has filtered into the world of work and school. Maybe it was only a matter of time before this was bound to happen.
I can’t help but sense that it feels like a shift for us all. Perhaps we’re becoming more in tune with our emotions and choosing to express them openly. Or some of us might just use this as a chance to feign empathy.
The next time you go on a date, maybe pay attention to the use of genuine therapy speak or the kind that may seem trendy. It’s up to you to separate the wheat from the chaff. A good dating life may depend on it.
If you think dating these days is wild, take a look at how the super-rich do therapy!
