What the hell is wrong with people?
A Tennesse Woman has been rescued after being held captive inside a closet for more than two months by her abusive boyfriend.
The 40-year-old woman was hiding underneath a house when passers-by noticed her cries for help on Saturday, March 11. She was emaciated and had cuts on her face when police arrived on the scene, and after treating her, they discovered she had been held captive inside of a closet for several weeks by her boyfriend.
The lady alleged that her relationship with her 30-year-old boyfriend, identified as Brenton Bell, became abusive prior to him forcing her into a closet, which he then locked and secured with a cable. She was only allowed out of the closet for an hour every day and had no access to a bathroom. Luckily she was able to break out of her prison and alerted the passers-by that saved her.
There are way too many stories like this these days.
The above case was reported soon after another woman had been saved from a Los Angeles home where she was being held captive by a male suspect for more than a week. The ordeal was made even worse due to the fact that the dead body of another woman was also found in the house where she was being kept.
The woman, whose identification wasn’t immediately available, reported meeting the suspect a week prior to the kidnapping. The man then later approached her with a gun and forced her into the house where she was assaulted and held captive. She later managed to escape and flag down a passing motorist.
Officers contacted 44-year-old Rafael Banda, who lived at the residence, entered his home, and found an adult woman deceased due to unknown reasons.
Banda has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and kidnapping.
These cases just emphasise the dangers local South African women also face with a recent increase in kidnappings. Instances of abduction have almost doubled in the last year, with 4 028 cases of kidnapping being registered in 2022.
According to Business Tech, kidnappings for ransom and extortion in South Africa have been on the rise, and if a Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime survey is to be believed, we now face almost 1 143 kidnappings per month since 2022.
This statistic has been brought into stark contrast when considering the abduction of biokineticist Riana Pretorius in Gqeberha only yesterday. She is still missing.
Something’s got to be done. But what?
