Whenever you see a car, bike, or flying machine with the Red Bull logo on it you know something batshit crazy is about to happen.
Aerobatic pilot Luke Czepiela is one of those ‘amazing men with their incredible flying machines’ that doesn’t seem too bothered about things like gravity, or a landing strip.
Czepiela is one of the remaining members of Red Bull’s Air Racing Team, and in a bold display of skill, and balls the size of weather balloons, landed his Carbon Cub on the helipad of the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah in Dubai.
The ‘runway’ for this stunt was a mere 26 metres, compared to a standard runway of 1 000 metres. To put this in perspective, imagine landing a plane on a tennis court suspended 220 metres above the ground. Like we said, weather balloons.
Czepiela, a commercial pilot who flies Airbus 320s in his day job, had been rehearsing this tricky, dangerous landing for the last two years—650 times.
Lucky for us, Red Bull always has a thousand GoPro’s following their daredevils, so take a breath and check out the stunt below:
The 56-story Dubai tower has been used for numerous stunts in the last few years, with Andre Agassi and Roger Federer playing a set on the helipad in 2005, and David Coulthard doing doughnuts in a Formula 1 car in 2013.
Czepiela nailed it, landing on the outer edge of the circular H pad. Elated, he jumped out of the plane and hugged his team, who were all going crazy on top of the tall building. “We landed a plane on a helipad!” he shouted.
Describing the take-off as ‘icing on the cake’ the pilot used nitrous oxide to give his plane a boost and once clear of the tower, proceeded to give beachgoers an aerobatic show before landing safely at the SkyDive Dubai runway. This time on the ground though.
People are crazy, but what a time to be alive.
