Nickelback has been the butt of many jokes over the last few decades.
But on Monday night the perpetually sad-looking Canadian rockers finally got the recognition they probably deserved.
That’s because they were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame at the annual Juno Awards.
The band has received twelve awards from twenty-eight nominations at the Juno Awards and seven awards from fifteen nominations at the MuchMusic Video Awards. Nickelback has also received two awards from six nominations at the American Music Awards and three awards from five nominations at the Billboard Music Awards.
In 2006, Nickelback received an award at the World Music Awards for World’s Best Selling Rock Artist, but despite all their acclaim and being nominated six times, they have never won a Grammy.
Funnyman Ryan Reynolds drew the short straw, telling the audience via video link:
“There are millions of reasons to be a proud Canadian, and tonight the Junos and Canada are coming together to celebrate one of them: homegrown talent from right here in Alberta, Joni Mitchell.”
As everyone had a giggle, the funnyman continued:
“What? Nickelback? Oh, I love Nickelback. Wasn’t Joni Mitchell in Nickelback?”
See, even Reynolds couldn’t help taking a dig at the band, but at least he followed up the joke with a montage of the band’s amazing career.
Fellow crooner Michael Buble made a rare appearance outside of the Christmas season as he also helped to sing the group’s praises.
Despite all the teasing, Nickelback is one of the most successful rock bands of all time and has sold more than 50 million albums. Their hit single ‘How You Remind Me‘ launched the band to stardom in 2002, and the album went on to be certified platinum eight times over.
Nickelback has also been called “the most hated band in the world” and has been the subject of numerous jokes attributed to the perceived derivative, repetitive, and formulaic nature of their music. Rolling Stone magazine even went so far as to name Nickelback the second-worst band of the 1990s, behind only Creed.
Despite all the hate, the group led by Droopy Dog impersonator, Chad Kroeger, has to be given their dues. They have been the soundtrack to many braai’s and breakups, and can now join the ranks of other famous Canadian musicians like Rush and Arcade Fire.
Well played Nickelcrack.
