“Mom — I just won an Oscar!”
Seeing Ke Huy Quan cry happy tears with his golden Oscars statue beaming next to him was just one of the most vindicating moments of the 95th Academy Awards.
Quan and Michelle Yeoh have opened the door for all Asians on the big screen, as they made history as the first two Asian actors to win in the same year.
That’s all thanks to their profound performances in the manic multiverse movie, Everything Everywhere All At Once.
The film full of google eyes, bagel black holes, butt plugs, and sausage fingers landed seven Oscars awards, including best picture, beating all the other nominees by a good stretch.
As the most nominated film of the night, reported The Guardian, EEAAO bagged the best actress (Yeoh), best director (Daniel Kwan with Daniel Scheinert), best-supporting actor (Quan), best supporting actress (Jamie Lee Curtis), best editing, and best original screenplay at the ceremony.
If Everything Everywhere All At Once didn’t take home all the main Oscars then I would have lost faith in well, everything, but alas, life is still wonderful and fair.

The fact that Brendan Fraser took home the Best Actor award for his emotionally heart-breaking/making role in The Whale – beating out Austin Butler and Colin Farrell – is the other most vindicating moment of the big Hollywood night. The Whale also won best makeup and hairstyling, which is totally appropriate as Fraser’s transformation was transfixing:

Honestly, the whole awards list makes total sense.
Besides The Whale and EEAAO, All Quiet on the Western Front won for best original score, best cinematography, best production design, and best international feature film.
Overall, a good night for the underdogs and people of colour in the film industry.
They may not all be your “personal picks,” but one thing I *do* love about this year’s acting winners quartet at the #Oscars is how they’re all actors who have been counted out – or shut out – at various points in their careers and came back against the odds to come out on top. pic.twitter.com/oQnOAe5yMh

Otherwise, Naatu Naatu, Kaala Bhairava and Rahul Sipligunj took home the best original song award for RRR, while Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was the best costume design winner, Women Talking won best-adapted screenplay, Top Gun: Maverick won best sound, Avatar: The Way of Water won best visual effects, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio won the best-animated feature.
Despite seven nominations, Spielberg’s personal drama The Fabelmans failed to win in any of its categories. Todd Field’s drama Tár, which received six nominations, and Baz Lurhmann’s Elvis, which received eight nominations, were also snubbed.
Yes, the host Jimmy Kimmel did make a joke about the Will Smith slap that overshadowed last year’s ceremony:
“If anyone in this theatre commits an act of violence at any time during this show, you will be awarded the Oscar for best actor and permitted to give a 19-minute speech,” he said.
If you want to catch all these names being called onto stage, you can check out the 95th Academy Awards ceremony broadcast live today on M-Net Movies 1 (DStv 104) during primetime at 8:30 PM.
